Boys golfers second in shortened tourney

The Havre boys golf team was just starting to make a run for first place Saturday morning at the Great Falls Invitational Golf Tournament when snow forced the cancelation of the event.

Scores from the first day were the only ones that counted.

"We had a great start to the second day," Havre coach Keith Evenson said, noting he had two boys who started the day 1-under par.

Havre senior Troy Toner shot a 75 Friday and won a tiebreaker to take fifth place. Senior teammate Nick Obie also shot a 75 to finish right behind Toner. Jason Johnstone followed Toner and Obie with a 78. Kevin Harada was next at 79. Johnstone's younger brother Jon rounded out the Havre team with an 88.

Behind an individual win from Adam Hober, Missoula Sentinel took the team title with a 304. Hober shot a 71 for the individual crown. Havre came in second with a 307, followed by Great Falls High (310), Billings West (312) and CMR (315).

Billings West's Josh Hedge finished second with a 72, Kalispell's Casey Keyser was third with a 74 and Billings West's Gage Hodges was fourth with a 74.

For the girls, Julie Wagner topped the Ponies' scores with a 93. Amanda Brock was next with a 110, followed by Katie Miller and Shannon Newth, each with a 116, and Heather Bowker with a 117.

"I was real pleased all the girls broke 120," Evenson said. "That was a goal I had for them."

Sisters Devon and Darrah Newell led Helena High to a first-place team finish. Devon Newell won the individual crown with a 76 and Darrah Newell tied for fourth with a 78. The Bengals finished nine strokes ahead of Bozeman with a 340.

Bozeman came in second with a 349, CMR third with a 352, Great Falls High fourth with a 353 and Billings Senior fifth with a 356. Havre finished near 12th place, Evenson said.

Great Falls High's Kylie Anderson tied with teammate Tina Bickford for second place, each shooting a 77. CMR's Erin Husted tied with Darrah Newell for fourth place with a 78.

The Havre varsity team will be in Chinook today, weather permitting, with both junior varsity squads competing in Havre. On Tuesday, the Havre team will travel to Lewistown.
