James Dowen Sr., 84, owner/operator of the Dowen Buick Company in Havre from 1950 to 1960, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at a Havre care center of natural causes.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Lutheran Church with Pastor Brad Ulgenes officiating. Luncheon to
follow memorial service at the church. Private family service with burial of ashes will be at a later date at the Highland Cemetery.
James was born on Sept. 8, 1917, to Rupert and Mildred (Watson) Dowen in Chinook. He was educated at Chinook and graduated from Chinook High School in 1936. James was the sole survivor of the 13 Dowen children. James worked for the Utah and Idaho Sugar Beet Factory in Chinook.
On Dec. 27, 1937, James married Esther Helena Norberg at her parent's home in Chinook. To this union, two children were born. The couple moved to Havre where James worked for his brother Claude W. Dowen at the Milk River Motor Company (where the new post office is now located). He worked for a time with the Ideal Bakery. In 1950, he and his brother Woodrow Dowen established Dowen Buick Company (where Blue Bear Car Wash is now located). He retired in 1960 and became caregiver for Esther in their home after her stroke.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Helena (Norberg) Dowen on Nov. 4, 1999, and 12 brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his son, Jim (Darlene) Dowen of Kalispell; daughter, Sondra (Jim) Pepin of Havre; five grandchildren, Todd Dowen of Kalispell, Pam Sundene of Renton, Wash., Candice Ballard of Great Falls, Danelle Cole of Great Falls, Darren Pepin of Havre; six great-grandchildren.
