Comets fall to Redbirds

Second game called in second inning due to rain

The Havre Comets lost to Lewistown 3-1 Sunday in a game that featured outstanding pitching by both squads.

Lewistown was paced by seven strong innings by starter Doug Longfellow and reliever Josh Roan. The Comets got their own strong showing from pitchers Brandon Morse and Brett Engebretson.

Comets coach Bob Evans thought both teams played well.

"Our guys pitched great. They only gave up three hits," Evans said.

The difference in the game was timely hitting and errors. "We just couldn't get guys home. We had more hits than them, but we need to do a better job of hitting in key situations.

"The errors we committed came with two outs," he added. "We should have closed out those innings."

Neither team could mount much of an offense, as all four runs scored were unearned. Lewistown's Chris Byerly took advantage of two Comet errors to score the game's first run in the top of the third inning. The Redbirds scored their final two runs on hits by pitcher Doug Longfellow, catcher Jeff Ernst and another Comet error.

Morse held Lewistown to only two hits, and struck out three. Engebretson pitched the final three innings and held Lewistown scoreless, allowing one hit and recording two strikeouts.

The Comets outhit Lewistown 6 to 2, but could only manage one run. The lone Comet score came in the fourth inning as catcher Ricky Houim doubled and scored on an error by the Redbirds.

"This was a fun game," Evans said. "Three-one games are fun games to be in at this time of the year, but they're more fun if you win them."

The second game of the doubleheader was called due to cold and rain.

The Comets are back in action Wednesday night in a nine-inning game against the Havre Northstars.
