Four Ponies break par at Chinook golf invite

Jason Johnstone finishes an amazing seven under on front nine, eight under for the day

Senior Jason Johnstone shot 29 on the front nine at the Chinook Golf Course and cruised to an 8-under-par 64 Saturday.

"For a high school kid to shoot a 7 under 29 front nine is truly remarkable," Blue Poney coach Keith Evenson said. "I can't remember anyone ever shooting that low. I don't know if his score of 64 is a record or not. But it doesn't matter. It is still a heck of an achievement"

Johnstone's 64 led a Havre team that combined for a 15- under-par score of 273. The Blue Ponies easily outdistanced runner-up Malta by 43 strokes.

Joining Johnstone under par were seniors Nick Obie, 68, Troy Toner, 70 and sophomore Trent Normandy with a 71. Kevin Harada shot 76 to round out the scoring for the Blue Ponies.

The top four Blue Ponies took the top four individual places.

Johnstone's 64 was three shots better than his previous best. Johnstone said he has shot 67 twice before, once at Havre's Beaver Creek golf course and at Cottonwood golf course in Bozeman.

"My swing felt as good as it has all year long," Johnstone said. "The putts were falling and I chipped in for an eagle and everything was just clicking." Evenson said the team's score astonished him.

"Our team has played well all year. We have been winning matches and tournaments by 40 strokes. We have been competitive against AA schools, in Helena and Great Falls."

Evenson credited the team's depth for its success.

"We have guys routinely breaking 80 that can't make the team. Some of the best matches these guys have played all year has been against each other during qualifying for the week's tournament."

The Havre white team just missed finishing second with a 323. Jon Johnstone and Eric Holden, who posted 79s, led the white team, and were joined by Matt Felt, 80, Eric Ward, 85, and Ben Erickson, 85.

Chinook finished fourth at its tournament with a 338.

Julie Wagner took the top individual honors for the Havre girls with an 85. The team placed second behind the Glasgow Scotties, who finished with a 384 ahead of Havre's 400. Malta finished third with a 410 and Chinook took fourth with a score of 447.

Other scores were Katie Miller, 102, Shannon Newth, 104, Amanda Brock, 109, Brittany Job, 109, and Heather Bowker, 114.

Evenson said he is pleased with the girl's team continued improvement.

"Julie Wagner shot a solid round, 42 on the front and 43 on the back," Evenson said. "She and the rest of the girls have been improving each week."

The Blue Pony boys and girls teams will be at the Butte Country Club for divisionals Friday and Saturday. Both teams will play a practice round on Friday with tournament play begining on Saturday.
