CORA LARSON, Obituary

WILLISTON, N.D. Cora Larson, 94, Williston, formerly a longtime Havre resident, passed away Monday, May 6, 2002, in a Williston nursing home.

Her memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Van Orsdel Methodist Church in Havre. The Rev. Michael Parr will officiate and interment will follow in Highland Cemetery.

Cora Amelia Moore was born Aug, 23, 1907, in Davenport, Iowa, to Charles and Elizabeth (Felner) Moore. She attended schools in Davenport and graduated from high school. She became a bookkeeper stenographer and worked for a bank in Davenport for several years.

Cora married Harlin R. Larson at Outlook on June 28, 1929. Cora and Harlin lived first in Outlook and then Chinook. They later moved to Havre where Harlin practiced chiropractic for more than 60 years. In the early years, Cora and Harlin also ran a little daily newsletter called the Daily Reminder. They had a rooming house for college-age young people who helped with the paper as part of their board and room.

Cora was active in Van Orsdel Methodist Church, serving in the Sunday school for many years, as president of the United Methodist Women, and in nearly every other office as well. She also served as secretary of the church council and recording secretary of the finances. When the church burned down, she held the high school Sunday school class in her home until a new church was built. Cora also was frequently chairwoman of her circle and was in charge of the coffee hour finances. She kept the kitchen supplied with necessities. In the community, Cora was a leader as mother advisor to the Rainbow Girls, a life member of the Eastern Star, president of the Havre Woman's Club, and drive chairwoman of the Christmas Seals.

Before Cora retired, she worked for Donald Hanson as a bookkeeper in his accounting firm in Havre. She worked for many years for her husband in his chiropractic clinic.

In later years, Cora traveled with Harlin for the Kiwanis group when Harlin was lieutenant governor of the Kiwanis Club. They also spent several winters in California near relatives. They traveled with a group from Kiwanis to Europe and had a marvelous tour with the group visiting many countries. They loved world fairs and attended many of them including the 1934 fair in Chicago, the Seattle fair, Spokane fair and the Montreal, Canada, fair. They visited Nashville and New England. They simply enjoyed life. Camping on weekends in Beaver Creek Park with friends was a favorite activity as well as camping and touring anywhere in Montana.

Cora was an accomplished crocheter, making at least 12 table cloths, 2 bedspreads, thousands of snowflakes, and hearts as well as doilies and lace for sheets and pillowcases. She was known for her good nature and smiling face.

A daughter, Judy Larson, who was mentally retarded, lived with the family for 10 years until she was placed in the children's home in Boulder. She preceded her parents in death.

Cora was also preceded in death by her parents; her husband, her sister, Willie; her brother, Charles; several half-brothers and a half-sister; a grandson, Richard; a great-granddaughter, Elise; and a great-grandson, Malichi.

She is survived by her daughter JoAnn (Jerry) Olson of Williston; two grandsons; two granddaughters; 10 great-grandchildren.
