KouGar Domination

The KG KouGars boys reigned at the District 9C track meet Friday in Havre, winning 15 of 17 events and taking the team title with 307 points, 208 more than its nearest competitor.

On the girls' side, KG's Kim Berg broke her own meet record in the javelin, set last year, by more than 10 feet. She threw the javelin 142 feet, 10 inches. Her previous record was 131 feet, 2 inches.

"I was out there to beat my old record because I wasn't very happy with it," Berg said. "I wanted 150 but I didn't get that. Hopefully I will by the end of the season."

The KouGars qualified nearly every competitor for the state tournament Thursday in Great Falls. Head coach Butch Marshall said two boys and one girl failed to qualify for the next meet.

"We're really deep and we do a good job in the events that we do," he said.

The boys had nine of the top 10 placers in the meet, led by Roger Larson and Thomas Marshall, each with 38. Casey Crites followed with 34. Larson and Marshall each had three first-place finishes and one second-place finish. Blue Sky's Roald Aageson came away with the only other top 10 point finish. Chris Yirsa came in tied for 11th place as Big Sandy's top point-getter.

Blue Sky came in second in team scores with 99. Big Sandy was third with 44.

"I was really pleased," Marshall said about his team score. "Those first places helped, there's no doubt about it. But we got a lot of seconds and thirds also and that helped."

The only event the KG boys struggled in was the 400-meter relay. That event has been a problem for his team the last few seasons, Marshall said.

"We've kind of had a jinx over our head on that one," he said.

This year's 400-meter relay team had the best qualifying time in the state, Marshall said, but a bad exchange and a moment of panic caused the team to be disqualified.

Berg has a chance to throw 150 feet Thursday at the divisional meet in Great Falls.

"I really like that throwing area in Great Falls," she said. "That's where I threw my farthest last year."

Due to knee surgery last fall, Berg was unable to defend her titles in running and jumping events. In order to have another event to compete in, Berg decided to throw the shot put. She placed second behind Blue Sky's Jessica Patrick with a throw of 29 feet, 10 inches. Patrick threw 30 feet, 1 inch.

"I didn't really know what to expect in the shot put but I was pretty happy getting second," Berg said.

Had it not been for a case of the stomach flu, KG's Aaron Smith may have been able to accomplish a goal of his Friday. Smith, who holds the record for the 1600-meter run, was hoping to break the 3200-meter run record set in 1999 by Travis Stehman. Smith fell short by 13 seconds.

"He did very well considering he wasn't feeling very well," Marshall said.

The Blue Sky Eagles captured a big team win with 210 points on the girls' side, nearly 100 more than second place Big Sandy. The KouGars placed third.

Kaila Warren was the top point-getter for the Eagles with 40 points, with teammates Cassidy Han and Partick also in the top five. Warren won two events and placed second in two. Patrick won three events and had one fourth and one fifth place. Han placed second twice, third twice and fourth once.

Box Elder's Tami Infante was the next highest scorer behind Warren, racking up 36 points on three first-place finishes and one third.

Big Sandy had the sixth-, seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-place scorers en route to a second-place team finish. The Pioneers were led by Kathy Bitz, Lindsey Danreuther, Ashley Goodian and Shana Davis. Goodian has three first-place finishes the 1600-meter run, 3200-meter run and 1600-meter relay.

Dwight Flansburg will be the lone representative for the Hays-Lodge Pole boys team at the divisional tournament. Flansburg placed fifth in the 1600-meter run and in the 400-meter dash.

For Rocky Boy, the 400-meter relay team composed of Adam Demontiney, A.J. The Boy, Chad Wolfchild and Upton Whitford will represent the Stars in Great Falls, along with Kyle Windy Boy and The Boy on the individual side.

Turner's Celeste Hedegaard and Britney Jones will advance along with Samantha LaMere from Rocky Boy and Vanessa Webb from Hays-Lodge Pole.

The top five placers from each event move on to Thurday's Northern C Divisional Track Meet in Great Falls.
