Havre teams sit in second place

Drew Krause shot a four-under-par 68 Thursday to lead his hometown team into a surprise lead over defending champion Havre after the first round of the State Class A Golf Tournament at Whitefish Lake Golf Club.

Whitefish golfer Jayme Duty shot a 76 and teammate Spencer Hughes a 77 as the Bulldogs held a eight-stroke lead over Havre.

Kiel Duckworth of Polson was in second place after shooting a 73 and defending champion Nick Obie of Havre shot 75 for third.

"The boys had a tough time," Havre coach Keith Evenson said. "I have big hopes the boys will come back and challenge Whitefish."

Rachel Warren of Billings Central led the girls competition with an 87. There was a three-way tie for second at 93 among Allie Bethel of Stevensville, Andrea Griffith of Miles City and Julie Wagner of Havre.

Kacee Tash and Robin Russell finished in the top 10 with 99s, to lead Dillon to a 417-431 advantage over the Havre girls.

"The girls just did pretty well and they played the harder of the courses today," Evenson said. "We're pretty positive where we're at."

The tournament will finish up today with the boys moving to the north course and the girls to the south course.
