Mail carriers meet their goal in food drive

The local postal workers met their goal.

As part of the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, the mail carriers and their families on Saturday collected 6,302 pounds of canned and dry food from area residents.

They were striving for the 6,000-pound mark.

"They were all really happy with how it turned out," said Melissa Jamieson, a Havre mail carrier. "We did really well, better than last year. The National Association of Letter Carriers really appreciated the support of the community."

In 2001, they gathered about 4,500 pounds for local charitable organizations.

Eleven carriers and their families, as well as an assortment of volunteers, helped gather 4,930 pounds of canned goods and 1,372 pounds of dry food.

Four girls from Chester High School also contributed their time for the cause.

The donations were either dropped off in the lobby of the Havre Post Office, or left at mailboxes around Hill County.

It was the 10th annual NALC Food Drive, and Havre postal workers have participated each year.

The food has been distributed to two local organizations, the Give Away House in North Havre and the Human Resources Development Council's domestic violence program.
