George Winston coming to Havre

World-renowned musician George Winston will perform a benefit guitar concert in Havre's First Lutheran Church at 7:30 p.m. on June 5.

Proceeds from the concert will go to the C.I. Carlson Music Scholarship Fund and the North Havre Community Food Bank.

Winston's favorite instrument is the solo acoustic steel string guitar. For many years, Winston has been studying and recording the masters of this solo finger-style guitar tradition, which dates back to the early 1800s in the Hawaiian Islands and predates the steel guitar by 60 years.

He had produced 36 slack key albums on the Dancing Cat record label.

Winston's other main inspiration for guitar tunes is the whole range of traditional American folk music. His one solo guitar recording is the soundtrack for the Japanese story, "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes."

Winston's latest album release is "Remembrance," a six-song CD created to raise money for the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. The CD features Winston playing piano, Hawaiian slack key guitar and harmonica.

He will release "Night Divides the Day-the Music of the Doors" this September.

Tickets prices for the June 5 performance are $7, or $6 with a nonperishable food item donation. Tickets are available at Cavaliers Men's Wear, Creative Leisure, at the door, by calling 265-7570 or by e-mailing [email protected].
