Anyone listening to the drought-silenced crops?

Our view

Some Montanans must feel as if they're crying in the wind.

North-central Montana has the worst drought conditions in the nation, and yet Montana's congressional delegation hasn't been able to convince the rest of Congress that we need disaster relief here.

Too bad the rest of the nation hasn't seen the parched fields that can't produce wheat, or feel the fear and pain of a ranching family as the last of the cattle are hauled away because the family can no longer afford to feed them.

Will whatever money those families have left last until the ground turns green again? There's not an abundance of jobs in small north-central Montana towns where businesses are in the fourth year of struggling with a drought economy.

We all appreciate the efforts of our congressional delegation to help secure disaster relief. Now we need the attention of the rest of Congress and the rest of the nation so aid will be approved.

How could they ignore us if they knew how bad things really are, and how bad they can become.

President Bush and Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman are right about the new farm bill. It's great but only if you have enough moisture to begin growing a crop.
