Havre U-14 team brings home state championship

The Havre U-14 Big Sky Soccer team capped an undefeated season last weekend, bringing home the state championship in the Big Sky Soccer League.

The team traveled to Stevensville for the double-elimination tournament and went undefeated to take the title in the 14 and under age group.

Havre was the favorite going into the tournament with a perfect 9-0 record. After the tournament, the team remained undefeated at 13-0.

The team defeated Plains, 12-0, in its first game, then Lewistown, 2-1, in the second game. In the semifinals, Havre beat Whitehall, 8-0. Lewistown came back to play Havre once again in the championship game but lost 3-0, which gave Havre the title.

The team has been coached by Mickey Kolis for the past two seasons. Kolis, an education professor at Montana State University-Northern, is moving to Eau Claire, Wis., and will teach there. Kolis, who played college ball and also coached in Illinois, has been volunteering his time to youth soccer programs in Havre for seven years.
