KouGars in running for fourth straight state title

The KG KouGars enter this weekend's State Class C Track Meet as the favorites to win their fourth-straight state title.

The KouGars dominated the District 9C boys meet two weeks ago, scoring 307 points 208 more than Blue Sky in second place. At the divisional tournament, the KouGars racked up 174 points. Geraldine came in second place with 50 points. KG won last year's state meet by 5 1/2 points over Arlee.

Aaron Smith and Casey Crites return as a state champions on the boys side with Roger Larson placing in two events. Eleven boys will compete for the KouGars at state.

Larson enters the state tournament as the divisional champion in three events. Crites and Smith won two events at last weekend's divisionals. Tyler Kapperud, Thomas Marshall, Robbie Gomke and Tel Sterner each won one event. Crites also finished second in two events with Larson adding one second-place finish.

KG's 1600-meter relay team will enter the tournament as the divisional champions. Kyle Reynolds, Tyler Kapperud, Smith and Larson will run on the team.

Blue Sky, Chester, Big Sandy and J-I also bring a handful of athletes to the competition. Chester finished fifth and Blue Sky ninth at the Northern C Divisional Meet. Big Sandy came in 14th place with J-I tying for 16th.

For the girls, KG's Kim Berg and Chester's Michele VanDyke seek to defend their individual titles at the state meet. Berg placed first in the javelin and VanDyke took first in the high jump.

Chester placed second behind Geraldine at last weekend's divisional meet with Big Sandy coming in third. Blue Sky finished in eighth, with KG tying for 12th and Box Elder coming in in 17th place.

Big Sandy's Ashley Goodian won the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs at the divisional meet. Berg won the javelin and VanDyke won the high jump. Box Elder's Tami Infante will enter as the divisional champion in the long jump.
