Library talk

Playing balloon tennis, racing real bugs, launching rockets and digging in the treasure box are just a few of the activities the Havre-Hill County Library has planned this summer during our annual summer reading program.

This years program "Join the Winners Circle Read!" is the fourth summer reading program for children's librarian Carrie Wilson. Planning each year's program takes many months but is well worth the time.

The library will kick off its reading program with a visit from a special guest. Cecile Smiley is a "quick-draw" artist from Great Falls and will be at the library on June 12 from 10 a.m. to noon. Smiley is a fourth- generation Montanan who is involved in many community projects in Great Falls. Her art is found in private collections around the world. In addition to her work as a "quick-draw" artist, many of Smiley's art designs are inspired by her love of dogs. She says she takes her pet poodle everywhere with her.

Smiley maintains an art studio at her home in southwest Great Falls. Her motto is: "You use a mirror to see your face. You use works of art to see your soul."

The summer reading program is open to all kids up to age 18. It will run from June 12 to July 31. Children may sign up until July 24. Every time a child comes into the library, up to once a day, he or she may pick a prize from the treasure box.

The children who reach their reading goal will receive a prize and certificate at the wrap-up program on Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Van Orsdel Methodist Church. Local storyteller Bill Chambers, sponsored by the Montana Committee for the Humanities, will be our entertainment for the evening.

The 13th annual Bug Race is on June 28 at 1 p.m. in the library parking lot. Bring a crawling bug.

Don't forget about Story Time every Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. All of the library's programs are free and open to everyone.
