Local artists work featured at museum gallery

The work of artist Joice Unruh Philippi will be on display in the H. Earl Clack Museum Gallery starting with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on June 4.

The exhibit continues through June 16. The museum and gallery are open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is free.

Philippi was born and raised in Havre. She married Russell Unruh and resided on a ranch north of Chinook, where they raised six children. Always feeling a need to be creative, Joice sewed, designed floral arrangements, and designed and created costume jewelry. After the death of her first husband, she began painting, with her sister Darlene's encouragement.

Three years ago, Joice wed Roger Philippi, moved back to Havre, joined the Havre Art Association, and began showing her paintings.

Joice is a self-taught artist. She has researched the care of paints and brushes, and experimented with a variety of mediums.

"It's similar to driving a car," Joice said. "You read the driver's manual, take the test. Then you drive, and that's when you learn.

"Once you paint," Joice said, "everything is seen in a different way."

She paints landscapes, florals and portraits. Joice has a special affinity for flowers, as they seem to offer the greatest challenge in color, texture and form.

She is frequently asked, "How long does it take to do a painting?" She responds, "It's not like baking a cake just so many ingredients and time in the oven. Each painting is different depending on the size of the canvas and the details of the overall theme."

Joice is constantly inspired by the world around her, and her oil canvas paintings are a reflection of her skill and artistry.

She has expanded her craft to include oil-painted glass vases. Her unique techniques have inspired others.

In addition to canvas, she has also been commissioned to paint on a variety of nontraditional surfaces. She welcomes the opportunity to participate in all facets of the art community.
