Ron Lorang of Finest Boot Repair will also provide some tips about purchasing and caring for hiking boots. Copies of the 2002 Wilderness Walks booklets will be available.

The meeting will be held next Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Havre-Hill County Library.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Wilderness Walks program. To celebrate, the Montana Wilderness Association is offering the biggest selection of hikes ever with 124 volunteer-led hikes across the state, including more than 30 hikes in central Montana. The hikes range from easy family strolls to more difficult ridgeline scrambles.

Many hikes are well-suited for families, seniors and children. A majority of hikes are on weekends, but the line-up also features strolls and long weekends, plus a few extended backpack trips, car camping and trail maintenance projects. The booklet includes details about mileage, elevation gain. and walk highlights or themes. All of the outings are free and open to the public, but reservations are required.

Cunningham is a longtime wilderness aficionado based in Choteau. He has written several hiking books and is a regular contributor to Montana Magazine.

Magera teaches at Havre High School. He is an authority on the history of the Bear Paws and serves as a guide at Bear Paw Battlefield.

The program is free and open to the public. Coffee, drinks and cookies will be sold.
