Havre woman celebrates 100th birthday Sunday

A celebration will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Fifth Avenue Christian Church for the 100th birthday of Margaret Gardener.

Gardener was an educator in Montana from the early 1920s until her retirement in 1967. She taught kindergarten and first grade at Fort Peck for 40 years.

The second youngest of six children, Gardener moved with her family to Harlem when she was 6, and her father homesteaded north of Harlem. Her mother died six months after they arrived.

Her earliest teaching assignments were at the Rattlesnake School and the orphanage at Twin Bridges.

After retirement, she moved to Kalispell to be near her sister Helen, who lived in Lakeside. Gardener moved to the assisted-living center in Havre in 1998 when her eyesight began to fail.

She has received greetings from many of her former students.
