Comets fall to Williston and Kootenai Valley

The Havre Comets dodged bullets in each of the first three innings Friday night but Kootenai Valley finally hit its target in the fourth inning.

Despite leadoff doubles in both the first and second innings and a leadoff walk in the third inning, the Rangers were held scoreless.

But things changed in the fourth when Kootenai Valley scored two runs. The Rangers added three more runs in the sixth inning en route to a 5-1 win.

Infielders Jesse Burns and Mike Broom each blasted RBI doubles in the sixth inning to account for the Rangers' scoring. Broom drove in Jesse Kraus, who led off the inning with a single. Burns, who later scored on a passed ball, followed, driving in Broom.

Kraus and Broom both also scored in the fourth inning on a two-RBI single by Dain Schumacher.

Broom led the offensive attack for Kootenai Valley with a 2-for-3 effort. Broom scored twice and drove in one.

Havre's lone run came in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Chris Chandler. Chandler drove in catcher Patch Wirtzberger, who laced a single to right-center field to lead off the inning.

Pat Marek struck out six and held the Comets to only three hits in seven innings. Wirtzberger had two of Havre's three hits.

Havre pitcher Trent Normandy gave up seven hits and struck out five in the loss.

The Rangers stole six bases.

The Comets fell to 1-2 in the rain-shortened tournament. Saturday and Sunday's games were canceled due to heavy rain.

The Comets will be back on the playing field Wednesday in Great Falls against the Sparkies. They will play two seven-inning games beginning at 3 p.m. The Comets will be on the road Friday through Sunday at a tournament in the Gallatin Valley.
