Erickson hires Quick as new Skylights assistant

After serving one year as an assistant coach with the Montana State University-Northern Lights basketball program, Warren Quick has been named as an assistant coach to Mike Erickson, the new head coach for the women's program.

Quick was previously the head coach at Circle High School, a Class C school in eastern Montana. At Circle High School, the school from which Quick graduated, Quick's teams compiled a 40-12 record. In 1999-2000, the Wildcats won the conference title and placed second at the district tournament. The following year, they won the divisional title after placing third at the district tournament, and made a trip to the state tournament.

"I'm real excited for the opportunity to work with Mike and the Skylight program," Quick said Tuesday.

Quick and Erickson have known each other for many years. They both graduated from Circle High School. Erickson recalls watching Quick play high school ball while he was "growing up."

"Growing up together and knowing each other's styles will help the transition and having been at Northern for a year will be a huge help," Erickson said. "Having his knowledge of the game is big. We're also familiar with each other, which is going to be a big key."

With both coaches hailing from Montana, Erickson and Quick said they have an advantage in recruiting.

"It helps knowing coaches across the state. It should really help the recruiting process," Quick said. "We can win with Montana athletes and we know that."

Quick has followed the Skylights since elementary school and the days of coach Loren Baker, who was Quick's physical education teacher while he was in grade school.

"As soon as (Baker) got the job here, I became really interested in the program and really followed it," Quick said. "That's when I started following Northern basketball and the Skylight tradition."

Quick will be involved in all facets of the game, including player academics, coaching and in-state recruiting.

"To be able to (coach) as friends and work together to build a program is key," Erickson said.

Quick is working toward earning a bachelor's degree in health promotion at Northern.

Quick and wife, Jami, have one daughter, Abby, who was born on June 1.
