Havre U-11 soccer team co-champs at state tourney

Thirteen 10- and 11-year-old players from Havre's Hi-Line United U-11 soccer team ventured to Helena for the Montana Cup Soccer Tournament last weekend.

Despite the rain, wind and cold, the kids were prepared to play. The Hi-Line United lost their first game to the Helena Arsenal, 3-0, but came back to defeat the Butte Maroons, 3-2, in the following game. Jordan VanVoast, Paul Turner and Shane Kemmer scored for the United.

In the Hi-Line United's third game, they narrowly defeated Whitehall 1-0. Brett Barros scored the lone goal.

The victory against Whitehall put the United in the championship game, which would be a rematch with Helena. Unfortunately, all of the championship games on Sunday were canceled due to an upper level player being hospitalized for hypothermia.

Havre was unable to avenge its earlier loss because Helena was unable to come up with a time for a rematch. The tournament officials declared both teams champions and they each received first-place medals.

The Montana Cup is the state tournament for the A division soccer teams of Montana.
