Nearly 200 youths fight for spots at national Hershey track meet

Local athletes finish strong

Nearly 200 participants from 31 communities traveled to Havre Saturday to compete in the annual Montana State Hershey Youth Track and Field Meet held on a gorgeous day at the Havre Middle School track. This year is the 25th anniversary of the national youth program.

Havre's A.J. Stops was the only triple event winner of the day, taking top honors in the 200-meter dash, 1600-meter run and standing long jump. Stops competed in the age 13-14 division. Darci Briere, also from Havre, won the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs in the girls 13-14 division.

Other multiple event winners include Karissa Frye of Billings, Danielle Muri of Billings, Lauryn MacKay of Billings, Kallie Olds of Great Falls and Alex Brekke of Bozeman.

Havre's Nathan Harada took top honors in the 100-meter dash in the boys 13-14 division. Chester's Lindsey Oraw won the girls 11-12 division 400-meter dash and placed seventh in the standing long jump.

Event winners qualify for selection to the Region 3 Team, which will travel to Hershey, Pa., on an all-expenses-paid trip for the North American Final Aug. 8-11. Event winners selected will compete in only one event at the national meet. Montana, along with Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, British Columbia and the Yukon make up Region 3.

Montana averages five to six competitors at the national meet. Last year, Havre's Karla Hellegaard and Chinook's Jacque McMaster made the trip to Hershey.
