Lights ink DSU transfer

Montana State University-Northern head wrestling coach David Ray announced Monday the signing of Brandon Padden from Camp Crook, S.D.

Padden is transferring to Northern from Dickinson State University where his program diesel technology was not available. Padden was a 2001 NAIA National qualifier for DSU.

Padden, at 5 feet 11 inches and 184 pounds, was a state champion with a 36-0 record his senior year and also won the prestigious Senior National High School Tournament in Pittsburg and the AAU National Folkstyle Tournament in Tulsa, Okla.

Other honors for Padden include the outstanding wrestler at the Belle Fourche Tournament and the South Dakota State Outstanding Wrestler of the Year in 2000. He also holds six school records, including most pins in a season (27) and career (98), most takedowns in a season (213) and career (618), and most consecutive wins in a season (36) and career (38).

Coach Ray said that Padden "is a major recruit for Northern and fills a big vacancy with the loss of national champion Tyson Thivierge."

He also was named to the all-state football team in 1999 and was a four-time state track qualifier.
