EDWIN CARLSTAD, Obituary

CHESTER Edwin Arne "Ed" Carlstad, 72, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at a Chester hospital after a 5-year battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chester. Burial of ashes with military rites will follow at the Chester Cemetery.

Ed was born March 31, 1930, Columbus, N.D., to Arne Karlstad and Edna Arneson. Arne died before Ed was born and Edna married Arne's brother Otto two years later.

Ed received his formal education at Fortuna, N.D., then began working as a farm and construction laborer. He joined the National Guard and was called into the regular Army in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. he served in Austria in Company "A" of the 969th Engineer Construction Battalion. He received his honorable discharge in 1953.

Ed returned to North Dakota to be with his bride, Eunice Faldalen, whom he married in Ambrose, N.D., on Feb. 16, 1953.

The Carlstads worked in construction and excavation, traveling to various work sites throughout the Northwest. They settled in Chester in 1974. Ed worked on small construction projects throughout the Hi-Line in the summers and contracted snow removal in the winters. In the early 1990s, he started Ed's Windshield Chip Repair, a business he enjoyed until his health failed.

After his semi-retirement, Ed volunteered as a grade school reading assistant for several years.

Ed was raised in the Lutheran faith and was active at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chester. He also belonged to the VFW and Sons of Norway. He served as past president of Sons of Norway and helped build a Viking ship used in local festival parades. He was proud of his Norwegian heritage, learned to speak Norwegian, and was always anxious to help with a local lutefisk dinner and related events. In 1981, he was thrilled by a trip to Norway. He also enjoyed attending the annual Hostfest in Minot, N.D.

Ed's many hobbies included tinkering with his equipment, especially his 1960 Buick. He also enjoyed music, dancing and playing the accordion. During his quiet time, he loved to record music and read, especially National Geographic. He also collected John Deere memorabilia. He always had an interest in aviation and took flying lessons many years ago.

Ed loved to visit with people and always exhibited Montana friendliness with a wave and a smile. He appreciated his family, especially their love and concern these past few years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenneth; and a nephew, Steve.

Survivors include his wife, Eunice Carlstad of Chester; sons, Dale of Chester and Darrell of Billings; daughters, Julane (Carmen) Jensen, Jeanette (Sandy) Anderson, and Janice (Larry) Hendrickson, all of Chester; brother, Wallace (Evelyn) Carlstad; sister, Joyce (Claude) Gustofson of Kalispell; sister-in-law, Charlene Carlstad of Richey; nine grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
