Repairs planned for Fresno Dam

Traffic might be slightly delayed across Fresno Dam next week while the federal Bureau of Reclamation does some maintenance work on the dam.

"What we're doing is fairly minor in scope," Richard Long of the bureau's office in Billings said today.

Bureau personnel noticed a minor depression in the earthen crest of the dam near the conrete parapet and will have an excavator dig out the area starting Tuesday, Long said. Once the extent of the problem is determined, the area will be backfilled and repaired.

The bureau is not sure what caused the depression, although it is likely a result of the heavy rains and snowmelt in the area early last month.

Heavy equipment will be working south of the spillway bridge during the maintenance. The bureau does not expect it will need to close the road, but single-lane traffic might be required.

Traffic speeds will be posted during the construction work, and a flagger will be present to regulate traffic as necessary.

The work will probably be completed by Wednesday, but that depends on what is found during the excavation and could take longer, Long said.

The last time any work was needed on the dam was in the 1950s, he said.
