DANIEL SUREAN, Obituary

Daniel Surean, 80, a retired railroad worker and farmer, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at a Havre hospital of natural causes.

Cremation has taken place. A family graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Cemetery.

Daniel was born Oct. 25, 1921, to John and Marie

Surean at Havre. He was educated north of Havre.

Dan entered into the Army Air Force in July 1942. He served in Normandy, northern France, and Central Europe. He was awarded the Europpean Theater Operations medal, good conduct medal, and Normandy medal.

He was assistant crew chief on a B-17 Flying Fortress from 1941 to 1945 in the 8th Air Force.

While in the service, he met and married Mary Nott-Harding on March 14, 1945, at the St. Joseph of the Holy Child Church in Bedford, England. They celebrated their 57th anniversary this year. To this union, three children were born. He was honorably discharged as a corporal in August 1945. He returned to Havre and went to work for the Great Northern Railroad as a crane operator. He farmed after his retirement.

He was a farmer and he liked horses, dogs and wildlife. He packed in the Bob Marshall Wilderness for 10 years with horses.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marie Surean; brothers, Nicholas, Russell and John Surean; son, Daniel John Surean in 1948.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Surean of Havre; daughters, Gloria Campbell of Blaine, Minn., and Lisa Cordier of Spokane, Wash.; sister, Mary Porter of Thermopolis, Wyo.; five grandchildren; various nieces and nephews.
