Spurs leave their mark on Comets

Lacking confidence has been a problem for the Havre Comets all season. But Sunday night the Comets might have been a little too overconfident.

Going into Sunday's doubleheader against Vauxhall, the Comets had scored 33 runs against the Spurs last week and had won five of their last eight games.

The Spurs showed the Comets early that they weren't going to get another easy conference win.

The Spurs started the scoring early with two first-inning runs, and ultimately winning the first game, 5-4. The second game was canceled during the second inning due to rains and lightning.

"We were terrible," Comets coach Bob Evans said. "The kids stunk up the field. We've got to come out and compete and they didn't do that. We have a habit of not coming out ready to play in the first inning. We've got to get ready to play in that first inning."

But it wasn't just losing that upset Evans.

"We've been playing too well to play like this," he said. "I told them right before the game that just because we won up there doesn't mean we will win here. We've got to learn that everybody's going to come and play tough."

The Spurs took a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning when the Comets slowly began to chip away. Havre scored one run on two hits in the inning to cut the deficit to two.

The Comets then scored two more runs in the fifth inning to tie the game. Patch Wirtzberger and Garrett Drake each had a single, a stolen base and scored in the inning. Drake's single drove home Wirtzberger. Chris Chandler followed with a ground out to drive home Drake.

The Comets quickly surrendered that lead when Vauxhall scored two runs in the sixth inning on two hits and one Havre error.

Despite scoring one run in the bottom of the seventh inning and having a runner on third with no outs, the Comets were unable to come back.
