Northstars undefeated in Canada; take top district seed

The Havre Northstars traveled to Canada Wednesday and Thursday, hoping to improve on their near perfect conference record.

And with two wins Wednesday against Fort MacLeod and two wins Thursday against Lethbridge, they did just that. The four wins gave the Northstars a 32-2 conference record and ensures that they will take the No. 1 seed into next week's Northern Class A District Baseball Tournament in Great Falls.

The Northstars redeemed themselves Thursday against Lethbridge, making up for a loss to the Miners earlier this season. The loss to the Miners was the first conference loss Havre suffered all season.

The Northstars took the first game of the doubleheader, 7-4, and won the second game, 12-5.

Three Havre runs in the sixth inning broke a 4-all tie. Steve Heberly had the lone hit in the inning a two RBI double.

Down 4-2, the Northstars' late rally started in the fifth inning. Havre scored two runs on one hit and one Miner error to tie the game.

Havre also scored one run in the second inning and one in the fourth.

Lethbridge scored two runs on two hits and two errors in the second inning. Jordan Salmon plated two with a triple to lead the team. The Miners also scored runs in the third and fourth innings.

Doug Ireland pitched a six-hitter in the win for Havre.

The Northstars scored six runs in the fourth inning in the second game en route to a 12-5 win.

The six runs came on four hits and two Miner errors. Dusty Heath and Ian Spencer each had RBI doubles. Heath drove home three and Spencer one.

Daine Solomon put an exclamation point on the win with a solo home run in the sixth inning. Solomon went 3-for-3 in the game with three runs scored.

Havre also scored three runs in the second inning, one in the third and two in the sixth.

The Miners score two runs in the third and seventh innings and one in the first.

Tyler Thompson pitched all seven innings, earning the win.

Havre also picked up two wins Wednesday in Fort MacLeod. Havre blasted 16 runs in the first game on 19 hits en route to the 16-13 win.

Solomon and Bobby Bergren belted home runs.

Fort MacLeod's big inning was the third when the Royals scored eight runs. Their lead-off batter homered in the inning.

In the second game, the Northstars won 8-3. They scored three runs in the third, two in the first and fifth and one in the seventh. Fort MacLeod scored two runs in the second inning and one in the fourth.

The Northstars wrap up their regular season Sunday against Medicine Hat's AA team. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
