Rocky Boys Powwow is well worth the visit

Our view

The Rocky Boy Powwow begins tonight. The powwow offers the Hi-line an annual opportunity to experience the culture of its Native-American residents. Visitors experience not only the grandeur of the venue and the event, but also gain insight and an increased understanding of the people of Rocky Boy and other Native American nations.

Beginning with the spectacular grand entry this evening at 7 p.m., the powwow will run through Sunday afternoon. Visitors will witness spectacular song and dance. Dancers of all ages will perform many different dances in their regalia. Vendors offer food and merchandise for those at the powwow. With the backdrop of the Bear Paw Mountains, the Rocky Boy Powwow is a breath-taking sight.

Everyone is invited, and Rocky Boy is famous for making guests feel welcome. There are a few rules of etiquette guests should remember. The dancers and drummers are competing for money, and photographers should not use flashes that would distract the competitors.

As in many cultures of the world, pointing with a finger is considered rude and shouldn't be done. If you want to point out a particular competitor to a friend, nod with your head toward that person.

Most of those who have ever attended Rocky Boy's powwow can't wait to go back. Visitors from across the nation and world come to marvel at the splendor of the powwow.

If you haven't been before, we urge you to take the time out of your busy summer schedule and attend this year's powwow, and find out why others travel so far to experience the event.
