Our view

Last Sunday marked the 11-month anniversary of the terrorist attack on our country. Not since the attack on Pearl Harbor has our country been subjected to an attack of this magnitude. Unlike the attack that propelled America into World War II, which was directed at a military installation and targets, the bulk of the casualties of the Sept. 11 attacks were innocent civilians.

Like Pearl Harbor and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, everyone remembers where they were when they first learned about the planes striking the World Trade Center towers.

Al-Qaida had hoped to use the attack to trigger a fear that would separate us along the lines of our diversity. The very opposite happened. Americans united, as all of us seemed to have a connection to someone with close ties to the attacks, or our nation's response.

We at the Havre Daily News would like to honor the victims and the heroes of 9/11 with stories from our readers about friends and loved ones with special ties to that tragic September day. We are also asking readers to share where they were when they first got the news of the attack, and their thoughts on that day.

Please send your stories and recollections to [email protected] or drop off a disc or typed page to Managing Editor Karen Datko at the Havre Daily News.
