Pony boys finish ninth in Helena golf tournament

The Havre High boy's golf team finished ninth out of 15 teams in the two day Helena Invitational golf tournament. The Blue Ponies shot 809 as a team in a tourney that featured all 13 AA teams and Whitefish.

"For us to be there in the middle with a new team is pretty good," said Blue Pony golf coach Keith Evenson.

After shooting a 79 on the first day at Green Meadow Country Club, junior Treny Normandy rallied to fire a 71 at Bill Roberts Golf Course for a 150 total to finish fifth overall.

"Trent shot an outstanding final round," Evenson said. "He really played well."

But it wasn't just Normandy who bettered their first day score, senior Jon Johnstone and Ben Erickson each fired 78 after shooting above 80 on their first day.

Evenson wasn't able to field a complete girls team for the second tournament in a row. Because of the change of seasons, the Ponies were without Mikyla Veis and Brittany Jobe who because of summer vacations haven't accumulated the requisite number of practices. However, the three team members that did compete played well.

Ryan Hamilton led the girls shooting a 194 with an impressive 90 on the second day. Both teams will hit the practice range as they don't compete until after the Labor Day weekend when they travel to Billings on Sept. 7-8.

Boys scores: Trent Normandy 79-71: 150; Jon Johnstone 80-78: 158; Eric Ward 82-85: 167; Ben Erickson 84-78: 162; Chazz Hurlbert 87-85: 172.

Girls scores: Ryan Hamilton 104-90: 194; Amanda Brock 105-113: 218; Heather Bowker 114-114: 228.
