Pony harriers get first test
August 31, 2002
The Havre High Cross Country team hits the ground running Saturday at the season-opening Cut Bank Time Trials at the Cut Bank Golf Club.
Head coach Kim Ray likes this event and is anxious to get her girls into a race atmosphere.
"I really like this event for several reasons," Ray said. "One thing is that it isn't scored teamwise so all of our girls get to compete and find out where they stand and where they need to be. It also gives all of our runners who have never ran in a real race, a taste of what it is like without the pressure of having to score for the team."
Havre High has three returning runners from last year, when the Ponies finished first in divisionals and fourth at the state meet. Havre's top runner from last year is back in senior Alicia Rundquist, along with junior Shannon Newth and sophomore Emily Kostelecky. The rest of the Havre competitors will be Katie Siebrasse, Sherry Winchell, Gwen Courtney, Kristine Colling, Nikki Diblee, Rebecca Hilliard, Andree Peterson, Kristin Burt, Kelsey Malsam, Laura Zentmire, Kayla Fehr, Megan Toldness and Kim Jestrab. Team manager is Megan Ricci. Senior Jenna Baltrusch suffered a broken foot and will not be competing for the Ponies.
All of Havre's roster will be running in Cut Bank. Normally at team meets there are only seven varsity runners.
There will be some very good teams at the meet, including AA schools Great Falls High and CMR, Class A Browning, Class B Shelby and several area Class C schools.
