Pony spikers head into new season at Browning

The Havre High volleyball team begins its 2002 season today at the Central A Volleyball Extravaganza in Browning.

"I'm really excited about this season," head coach Lacey Anderson said. "We have a great group of girls with great attitudes and great team chemistry. We just have to put it all together on the court."

The Ponies are coming off a 2001 season in which they went 7-3 in conference play and were Central A champions. They had a stellar third- place finish at the State A tournament.

"We had a great season last year and I think if we do some key things right this season we can have another great year," Anderson said.

Anderson has several key returning players from last year's team that she will look to for leadership as well as solid play on the court. Seniors Kaci Kitchens, Jeanna McPherson and Sara Suek along with juniors Alicia Overcast and Brittany Vandersloot all return from last year's team.

On the court, Anderson is confident in her team's skill and capabilities.

"We are a really good passing team and a really good defensive team and we have great team chemistry, so I think we'll be ready to play," Anderson said.

The Ponies begin the weekend today with two regular conference matches against Belgrade and Butte Central. Saturday morning the Extravaganza begins with pool play in the morning and a double-elimination tournament Saturday evening. The Blue Ponies' pool includes Belgrade, Butte Central and Anaconda.

Anderson really likes the way this weekend sets up for her team and thinks it is a great way to start the season.

"The Extravaganza is a great tournament because it lets us see our competition in our division right away. And by the end of the weekend it is really going to let the girls know where they stand as a team," Anderson said. "Even though we know that everyone will be improved by the time we get to divisionals, it really gives the girls a good idea of where they need to get to."

The action all gets under way for the Blue Ponies today at 4:30 p.m. against Belgrade.
