More events shape up for 9/ll anniversary in Havre

The Hill County commissioners will adopt a resolution Thursday to commemorate the victims of Sept. 11.

The resolution condemns the terrorist attacks and pledges support to President Bush's antiterrorism efforts. It also promotes giving blood.

"Obviously, we feel dedicated to this resolution seeing as this hasn't only been an attack on New York's World Trade Center but the United States as well," commission chairman Pat Conway said. "Of course we recommend to all individuals all support with blood donations."

Last year, the commissioners helped organize a Walk for Peace on Oct. 13, in commemoration of the 9/11 victims.

Scores of Havre businesses and organizations donated food and beverages for the post-walk lunch.

The $3,5668 in proceeds from the Walk for Peace were donated to the United Way September 11th Fund, Conway said.

The one-year anniversary of Sept. 11 will be recognized by the American Legion and the Havre Fire Department, which will host various ceremonies and activities.

Also on Sept. 11, the Havre Jaycees plan a fireworks tribute of several minutes at 9:11 p.m. at the Hill County Fairgrounds.

Although the county commissioners are supporting the planned events in commemoration of the Sept. 11 attacks, they aren't actually involved in them, Conway said.

The theme for the local American Legion's events is "We will remember" and the group is planning to ring a bell once at the exact time of each of the four plane crashes on Sept. 11. After the ringing of the bells, the group will have a reception on the west lawn of the Hill County Courthouse at noon.

The Fire Department's plans involve a bell ringing, flag lowering and reception which is scheduled to start at 7:45 a.m. on the corner of Fourth Street and Fifth Avenue.
