Eastern Star has 100th anniversary

Havre Chapter No. 30 of the Order of Eastern Star will celebrate its centennial anniversary this month. Organized in May 1902, its charter was granted at the Grand Chapter meeting in Butte on Sept. 19, 1902, and presented to the local group in Havre on Oct. 2, 1902.

A special day of celebration is planned on Sept. 14 at the local Masonic Temple building. Worthy Matron Elaine Rosman and Worthy Patron Ramon Bergh will host a noon luncheon for the senior members of the chapter to meet Worthy Grand Matron Alice Engen of Circle, who will be visiting the chapter that day.

The chapter currently has 29 members who have received the honorary 50-year membership.

Associate Matron Martawn Veseth is chairing the noon luncheon, assisted by Associate Conductress Dorothy Flickinger.

Activities will begin at 11 a.m. Sept. 14 with registration chaired by Secretary Pauline Petersen. Engen will conduct a school of instruction for the officers of the local chapter at that time. Following the luncheon, pictures will be taken of the officers and state dignitaries.

At 2 p.m., the local chapter officers will exemplify the ritualistic work for the inspection of the Worthy Grand Matron. At its conclusion, the chapter will be open to the public for a time of reminiscing.

Havre Chapter has been honored during its past 100 years with the election of four of its members to the highest positions in the Grand Chapter of Montana. William B. Pyper served as Worthy Grand Patron in 1907-08, Mary Stranahan served as Worthy Grand Matron in 1921-22, Cady R. Stranahan served as Worthy Grand Patron in 1927-28, and Selena Paulson served as Worthy Grand Matron in 1964-65. Selena lives in Spokane, Wash., and will celebrate her 100th birthday in March.

The day's events will end with a prime rib dinner at 6:30 p.m. in the Temple dining hall. Sam Clawson, Master Mason of Havre Masonic Lodge No. 55, will prepare the prime rib along with his famous dinner rolls. The local Spanish Club of Havre High School will assist in the kitchen and dining hall throughout the day. A special anniversary cake and ice cream will be served. Dinner reservations may be made by calling Pauline Petersen at 262-9341.
