Havre couples daughter goes on with life in New York after 9/11

Our daughter, Jessica Liese, moved to New York City after graduating from Mount Holyoke College in May of 2001. On the morning of Sept. 11, she was traveling on the Q train to her job at Carnegie Hall. The Q runs near the World Trade Center, so Jessica could see smoke billowing from the first tower as the train passed it. The second tower had not yet been hit.

Jessica arrived at work safely, still not knowing what was happening. Soon after, the train service was shut down. There was no telephone service, so for a very long hour we did not know if she was safe. Finally, we received an e-mail saying that she was OK. By this time, Jessica and her co-workers were watching the tragedy unfold on the TV news.

Some employees were going home, but she was unable to get to her home in Brooklyn after the trains were stopped and the bridges closed.

Jessica had friends who worked in the World Trade Center, and she had been in the building just a few days earlier. She's still in New York City, currently working at Condenast Publishing, and determined not to let the events of Sept. 11 impact the way she lives her life.
