Firefighters have fund-raiser

Havre firefighters are holding a fund-raiser Friday as part of their effort to raise money for a thermal- imaging camera.

The department needs $20,000 for the camera, which can help save lives by detecting people in burning buildings.

The camera finds all sources of heat, finding hot spots that would not otherwise be detectable.

"First and foremost is victim recovery," Havre fire chief Dave Sheppard said.

The exact model and unit of camera the department will buy still hasn't been picked out, but prices have been dropping, Sheppard said.

Most large fire departments in Montana already have thermal-imaging cameras, he said.

So far firefighters have collected between $2,000 to $3,000 in donations for the camera, Assistant Fire Dhief Tim Ranes said.

Friday's fund-raiser will begin at 6 p.m. at the Eagles Club. A swiss steak dinner will be offered for $7.50 a plate. The Eagles Club will match the money raised by up to $500, club manager Tom Farnham said.

The fund-raising effort is by Local 601 of the International Association of Firefighters.
