Havre boys golf team wins own tournament

Havre High junior Trent Normandy shot a sizzling 3-under-par 69 to set a tournament record while taking medalist honors in the Havre High Invitational golf tournament at the Beaver Creek Golf Course Saturday.

"Trent played exceptionally well," said Havre High head coach Keith Evenson. "He bogeyed the last two holes and still shot 69."

But Normandy wasn't alone on the leader board. In fact, Havre players finished in the top five places on the boys side, with the Havre varsity finishing first in the team competition and the junior varsity "blue" squad placing second.

Eric Ward finished second with a 76 while teammate Jon Johnstone was third with a 77. Ryan Safley, representing the Havre JV "blue" squad played well for the second consecutive tournament and finished fourth with a 78.

"He was our sixth man," Evenson said of Safley. "He played very well in East Glacier last week too. Chazz Hurlburt beat him this week in qualifying."

Something that pleased Evenson greatly was the 308 team score of his varsity squad. That score was identical of the last year's team score at the Havre tournament. That squad went on win last year's state meet.

"It showed that it's not just Trent playing well," Evenson said.

On the girls side, the CMR junior varsity captured the team titles with a 443. Havre finished second trailing by nine strokes with 452.

Individually, the Ponies were led by Ryan Hamilton who finished second to Lewistown's Caitlin Flament with a 103. Amanda Brock finished sixth for the Ponies with a 115, while teammates Brittany Job and Heather Bowker tied for eighth, each shooting a 117.

"They're not doing too badly," Evenson said. "I was pleased with the way they played. This is just our second tournament with a full girl's team."

The Ponies are in Lewistown today for another tournament. It will be the Ponies last competition for 10 days so Evenson is hopeful that the competition in Lewistown will be challenging.
