Class C football piles up points

In a weekend of unbelievably high scoring football games around the state, the team that topped them all had to be the Highwood Mountaineers. Saturday in Highwood, the Mountaineers cracked the 100 point mark by defeating the Brockton Warriors, 108-6.

Highwood scored 16 touchdowns on the day, including 12 on the offensive side of the ball. Eleven of those touchdowns came on the ground, with six different rushers reaching the endzone. Highwood also turned four Brockton turnovers into scores. Three of those turnovers came on interceptions that were returned for TD's. Brockton, now travels to Rocky Boy this weekend. The Stars were on the losing end of 78-13 thrashing at the hands of Lambert, themselves.

Sticking with the offensive theme, the Brady Bulldogs racked up 82 points on Box Elder on Saturday in Brady. The Bulldogs brother combination of Adam and Matt Tranmer had monster offensive numbers in the victory. Matt threw five TD passes on the day, while brother Adam caught a touchdown pass, threw two TD's, ran two kickoffs back for scores and also returned two interceptions for touchdowns. Adam also kicked four PAT's in the victory.

The non-conference schedule has ended for all Class A football teams and the Central A conference will now have to sort out what looks like a very tight race.

As it stands, no team in the conference has a winning record after the first three weeks of the season.

The Havre Blue Ponies (1-2) open their conference season on the road at the Browning Indians. Browning who snapped a 40 game losing streak with a victory over Ronan earlier in the season is also 1-2. Defending conference champion Laurel is 1-2 on the season as they host Belgrade (0-3) and Livingston (0-3) will visit the defending state champion Lewistown Eagles who are also 1-2 on the season.

Things are also tight in District 2B football as well. Glasgow and Malta are both undefeated in conference play. Plentywood and Harlem are still alive in the playoff race as they both stand at 1-1 in conferenceplay. Chinook, Poplar, and Wolf Point are still searching for their first win.

Key games in the district this weekend include Glasgow visiting Harlem and Plentywood visiting Chinook.

While it is still very early in the season the Northern C and Northern six-man races are becoming a little more clear-cut.

In the Northern C, Power-Dutton-Great Falls Central has yet to be challenged, having won their first three games quite handily. Belt and Centerville are also sitting at 3-0. KG-Blue Sky follows at 2-1, while Big Sandy, Chester, and Hays are chasing the pack at 1-2.

The key match-up of the week is in Rudyard on Saturday when the Big Sandy Pioneers come calling against KG-Blue Sky.

In Northern six-man action four teams have supplanted themselves at the top of the conference standings. Brady, Geraldine, Geyser, and Highwood are all 3-0 while J-I and Augusta are sitting in the middle of the pack at 1-2. Playoff implications will definitely be on the line this weekend when Brady visits Geyser and in Joplin where J-I hosts Augusta for homecoming.

Sunburst senior volleyball standout Carly Kleinert had a weekend she won't soon forget. On Friday against Chester, Kleinert had 25 kills, six service aces and a block. On Saturday, Kleinert continued to put up big numbers as she racked up another 25 kills and also added seven blocks. Her efforts helped Sunburst remain undefeated in District 6-C play.

Picked to be the team to beat in the district and in the Northern division, the Refiners haven't disappointed and are sitting atop the standings at 6-0. The Blue Sky Eagles (5-1) and Chester Coyotes (4-2) are right on their heels with a lot of season left. KG is sitting in the middle of the pack at 3-3. The Big Sandy Pioneers are at 2-3, followed by the J-I Rams at 2-4 and Box Elder at 1-5. The Rocky Boy Stars are still searching for their first win in conference play.

While many people were in Chinook on Saturday watching Chi Chi Rodriguez, Trent Normandy was back at Beaver Creek Golf Course in Havre playing some sizzling golf of his own.

Normandy, a junior on the Blue Pony golf team fired a three-under-par 69 to take medalist honors at the Havre Invitational. Despite the fact that Normandy bogeyed the final two holes of the day, his 69 was a Havre Invitational record.

However, it wasn't a school record. Last year, Jason Johnstone fired an 8-under par 64 at Chinook. Johnstone's score is also believed to be the lowest round in a MHSA sanctioned tournament.
