MAXINE E. BAILEY, Obituary

KALISPELL Maxine Elizabeth Bailey, 87, Kalispell, died peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at a Kalispell care center.

Burial has taken place next to her husband, Ed, in the Conrad Cemetery and the family will hold a private memorial service for Maxine.

Maxine was born in Havre to Helen (Maxwell) and Alexander Chisholm on April 25, 1915. She attended Havre Public Schools, Northern Montana College and the University of Minnesota. She graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in English and education from the University of Southern California in 1938.

Maxine taught high school English in Malta, Winnet, Broadus and Poplar before marrying Edward Bailey in 1941. They lived in Chester and Eureka, where Ed was superintendent of schools until 1950, when they moved to Kalispell, where they have resided since.

Maxine was a homemaker for most of her life, enjoying her three children, John, Jim and Helen, and taking part in community activities. Maxine and Ed were lifelong members of the First Presbyterian Church and she was active in PEO and the Retired Teachers Association. She returned to teaching in 1958 at Linderman, where she taught until 1967. She enjoyed her students immensely and the camaraderie of her fellow teachers.

One of her fondest memories was a trip to Catron, Scotland, after Ed's retirement, where she was able to spend a few weeks with relatives and friends of her parents who came to the United States in the early part of the 20th century. She enjoyed several winters as a "snowbird" in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., where she and Ed enjoyed the sunshine and making new friends.

Maxine dearly loved her family and her life in Kalispell.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Roderick Chisholm and Robert Chisholm; and her loving husband of 60 years, Edward.

Survivors include her sons, John D. (Robin) Bailey of Kalispell and James E. Bailey of Spokane, Wash.; daughter, Helen Bradley of Yakima, Wash.; brother, Kenneth Chisholm of Carpentaria, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Edward Bailey Scholarship Fund at the Hochaday Center or to Cotley College in Nevada, Mo.
