Sunburst remains unbeaten in 6C; KG wins a pair

It was a fairly light weekend in high school volleyball along the Hi-Line. However, several teams picked up key victories over the last three days.

Thursday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters picked up a key win in District 2B play as they downed the Malta M-Ettes in four tightly contested games. The 'Beeters won the first two games by scores of 25-23 and 25-14. Malta won the third game 25-17 before Chinook finished the M-Ettes off in the fourth 25-19.

Chinook was paced by Brittany Buhman with eight kills. Jess Hollingsworth contributed 18 digs and Holly Dennis had 28 of Chinook's 30 assists. Chinook will host Wolf Point on Friday. The 'Beeters then travel to the Glasgow Invitational on Saturday.

In Kremlin, the KG KouGars knocked off the Havre High junior varsity team by scores of 19-25, 25-17, 25-22, and 25-16. The KouGars got 10 kills and nine blocks from Cady Arifin. Celeste Nordrum added 15 blocks, and Kim Berg had 22 digs and five service aces. The Ponies were led by Kristin Evanson with nine kills and three blocks. Ashley Hagen added two aces in the loss.

The KouGars continued their winning ways on Friday night, picking up a big 6C victory over the Big Sandy Pioneers. The match went to four games with the KouGars winning by scores of 25-20, 25-22, 16-25, and 27-25. Cady Arifin turned in another fine all-around performance with six kills, two blocks, 15 digs, and three aces. Berg added 11 blocks and three aces. Stef Dees had 18 assists and Emily Stewart added four kills.

KG hosts the Havre High JV team again this Thursday night.

In Box Elder, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars fell to the host Bears by scores of 25-20, 20-25, 9-25, and 16-25. Brandi Lawrence had eight blocks for the Bears. Chassidy Parisian had eight assists, and Connie Menard had five of the Bears' 24 service aces. The Morning Stars got 10 kills and four blocks from Tia Gopher. Allie Sunchild added eight assists.

Both Rocky Boy and Box Elder will partake in the J-I Volleyball Showcase on Saturday in Joplin.

The Sunburst Refiners continued their hot winning streak by defeating the J-I Rams 25-19, 25-11 and 25-12 Saturday in Joplin. The Rams were led by Cari Fusk with 14 assists and five service aces. Laine Lybeck added five digs, two kills, and a block. Sunburst got another 20 kills and four blocks from Carley Kleinert, while Desiree Overcast had 13 assists and four digs.

J-I will host the Volleyball Showcase on Saturday.

It was a good homecoming for the Chester volleyball players as they followed their football counterparts with a win. The Coyotes picked up a key 6C victory over Blue Sky. The Coyotes dropped the first game 22-25 before coming back to win the next three by scores of 26-24, 25-13 and 25-15. The Coyotes were paced by Meghan Kraft with 10 blocks. Alicia Fossen had six kills, and Marissa Stokes added 17 assists. Blue Sky got six kills, six blocks, and three aces from Jessica Patrick. Natalie Strissell had three aces, and Lindsey Anderson contributed six kills.

Chester hosts Class B Fort Benton on Thursday night, and will be in Power on Saturday for the Power Volleyball Showcase. The Eagles will be in Joplin for the J-I Volleyball Showcase on Saturday.
