A football doubleheader for Havre fans

With fall now officially here, the days grow even shorter and the temperature a little colder, but football fields around the state of Montana are still the place to be.

Perhaps the most exciting place to be is here in Havre on Saturday when a fans will be treated to an entire day of football. As part of a televised double header with Omega Television. The Montana State-Northern Lights will take on Carroll College at 3 p.m. while the Havre Blue Ponies will face the Laurel Locomotives at 7:30 p.m. as part of their homecoming festivities.

Havre High and Northern have teamed to offer a special ticket price for the doubleheader. Adults will be charged $4, students $3 and children $2. Northern and HHS students will still be admitted to either games for free with a valid student I.D. or activities card, while adults can still use either their Northern or HHS passes for admittance to either games.

The leveled parking in the stadium will offer some different prices according to the time you arrive at the stadium.

The Century Club Football Booster reserved parking spaces will be held until half-time of the college game, at which time its tier parking will be available for the regular high school price of $3 per car for the high school game. There will also be an entire game-day rate of $10 per spot, if you arrive before the college game.

Fans with questions about the arrangements can contact either Ted Spatkowski at 265-3761 or Dennis Murphy at 265-6732.

Besides being on television, the Havre-Laurel game has some serious conference championship implications. Havre, Laurel and Lewistown are in a three way tie for first place in the Central A. The winner of the game should be in a tie with Lewistown who visits the much improved Browning Indians on Friday. The Belgrade Panthers and Park High Rangers will meet in Livingston on Friday in a matchup of winless teams.

There will be a new team atop the Class A power poll this week thanks to the Miles City Cowboys. Friday night the Cowboys knocked off the top ranked Sidney Eagles in overtime 26-20 on the Cowboys home field.

The Colstrip Colts picked up one of the easiest victories in school history as they defeated Glendive Friday night, 2-0 in a forfeit. Glendive was forced to forfeit because there were no referees for the game. A scheduling mix-up between the referees that were hired to officiate the game and the Glendive athletic department gave the officials the wrong date on their calender. Consequently, no referees showed up and the host Red Devils were forced to forfeit the game. The loss puts Glendive, who is already having a tough year on the field, at 0-4 on the season. The Red Devils attempt to turn their season around when they visit Billings Central on Friday night, hopefully there will be officials at that game.

In District 2B action, the marquee matchup of the season takes place in Glasgow on Friday. The undefeated Glasgow Scotties host Class B perennial powerhouse Malta in a matchup that could see a changing of the guard of sorts. Malta is 3-1 overall on the season and 3-0 in conference play, while Glasgow is also 3-0 in conference and 4-0 overall including a week one win over Class A Glendive. If the Scotties can defeat Malta, it would put them one big step closer to a district championship.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters are still searching for their first win of the year and that may come on Friday when they visit Wolf Point. Like the Beeters, the Wolves have had some trouble putting points on the board this season and the possibility of a Chinook win is very real.

In Northern C action, Chester and Big Sandy picked up key wins over the weekend and will look to build on that momentum this weekend. On Friday night, the Pioneers (2-2) will host the Heart Butte Warriors (0-4). On Saturday, Chester visits an undefeated Centerville team who is for first in the conference standings going into week five.

In Six-Man football, the Rocky Boy Stars are coming off of their first win of the season. That victory came on Saturday as the Stars trounced the Brockton Warriors 79-6. Their Six-Man counterparts in Box Elder will look to get into the win column for the first time in almost two and a half years. The Bears, 0-4 so far this season, did not have a football team last year. Box Elder will host Lambert on Saturday afternoon.

If the Havre High boy's Cross Country Club was allowed to compete at the State A Cross Country Championships the rest of the state would need to be worried. The Ponies have pretty much cleaned up on the competition that they have faced so far this season. Lead runners Jeff Sprinkle, Kasey Barsotti, and Kyle Baltrusch have been turning in some solid individual times. However, due to the Title IV balance of sports the Ponies cannot compete at either the divisional or state meets.

Several big volleyball midseason tournaments will take place this weekend. In Joplin, the J-I Rams and several other District 6C teams, including the undefeated Sunburst Refiners, will get together for the J-I volleyball showcase. In Power, the Power Volleyball Showcase will also feature some of the area's top Class C teams.

Meanwhile, the Havre Blue Ponies return to Lewistown for the second straight weekend for a triangular meet. This weekend the Ponies will get their third crack at the Fergus High Golden Eagles. Lewistown has beaten the Ponies in Browning and in Great Falls already this season.
