DONALD BROSTROM SR., Obituary

Donald Edward Brostrom Sr., 71, a retired meteorologist, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at a Great Falls hospital of natural causes.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Donald was born Dec. 10, 1930, to A. Norman and Aletha (Mercer) Brostrom in Olympia, Wash. He was raised and educated in Olympia and graduated from

Olympia High School. He entered into the U.S. Navy on June 29, 1948, and served four years during the Korean conflict. He was stationed at the Fleet Weather Center in Guam. He was honorably discharged on June 20, 1952, as an AG 2. He attended Northern Montana College and graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in math and history.

On Aug. 1, 1953, he married Beverly J. Larson in Olympia and the couple moved to Havre, where Donald worked as a meteorologist. The couple lived in Havre for three years before moving to Spokane, Wash. In 1963 the family returned to Havre, where Donald worked for the Havre Weather Service. He retired in 1982.

Don enjoyed many hobbies such as coin and stamp collecting, fishing, camping, and hunting. He played the organ and also enjoyed listening to music.

Don was a member of the VFW and the Eagles. During his 35 years of membership in the Eagles he served as the local president, state president, and mountain regional president, along with holding numerous positions at both the state and local level. He was also instrumental in the beginning of the Eagles Manor Retirement Home. He mostly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his family.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and his aunt, Fran Sheehan.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years and two months, Beverly J. Brostrom of Havre; daughters, Debra (Ron) Sampson of Hingham, and Valerie (Tom) Farnham of Havre; son, Donald (Trina) Brostrom Jr. of Havre; grandchildren, Jennifer Brostrom, Franklin Lee Springer, RaeAnn Brostrom and Brandon Brostrom, all of Havre, and Angel Jean Sampson of Hingham; sister, Rosie (Bob) Savage of Morrow, Ga.; brothers, Rudy (Judy) Brostrom of North Augusta, S.C., and Ted (Shelby) Brostrom of Huntsville, Ala.; half-sisters, Elsie (John) Wagner of Olympia, Wash., and Zoa Hacker of Tacoma, Wash.; niece, Jean ( Harold) Ust of Clifford, N.D.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorials in Donald's honor may be made to The American Heart Association, 510 First Ave. N., Great Falls, MT 59401, Havre Eagles Manor, 20 West Third St., Havre, MT 59501, of American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1, Rockville, MD 20852.

Services and arrangements are under the direction of Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.
