Signup began Tuesday for a new program for livestock producers, called the Livestock Compensation Program, with payments to made soon after. "This is a good program for Montana's livestock producers," said Randy Johnson, executive director of the Farm Service Agency in Montana. "Montana ranks sixth in the nation in the number of beef cows and sheep. We are happy to provide these producers some financial compensation during these drought-stricken times."

LCP is available to livestock producers in all 56 Montana counties due to the disaster designation in March by the secretary of Agriculture. Eligible livestock include beef cattle, dairy cattle, buffalo and beefalo. The livestock must have been owned by the producer for a minimum of 90 days with June 1 falling within the 90-day ownership period. Livestock that died or were sold prior to Tuesday's signup date, but otherwise meet the eligibility requirements, will also be eligible for payment. Livestock housed in a feedlot are eligible if owned by the certifying livestock producer.
