LANCE NEWMAN, Obituary

BILLINGS Lance Newman, 48, died unexpectedly Saturday, Sept. 21, at a Great Falls hospital from a ruptured thoracic aorta.

Respecting Lance's wishes, cremation has taken place and no memorial service will be held.

Born March 7, 1954, in Sheridan, Wyo., Lance moved with his family to Billings in 1956. He attended Billings West High School and participated in football and track. He graduated in 1972. Lance received a bachelor of science degree in television production in 1978 from Montana State University-Bozeman.

Lance was a staff announcer for KTVQ Television in Billings from 1978 to 1980, where he hosted "Today in Montana." He moved to Phoenix in 1980, where he pursued acting for the next 10 years. In 1990, Lance moved to Page, Ariz., as the production director for KXAZ-FM/KPGE-AM. Longing to return to Montana, he began broadcasting in February 1997 for New Media Broadcasters' KOJM-AM and KPQX-FM in Havre and KRYK-FM in Chinook.

Lance thrived on sports, especially the Arizona Cardinals, and the outdoor recreation of Montana. Lance loved the gatherings at the family cabin on the Main Boulder River. His nephew, Erich, will miss his fishing partner who had the patience and understanding to teach a 7-year-old to find the "big ones." His brother, Kent, will miss the "big man with the even bigger heart" who had a sense of humor that destroyed the most serious demeanor. His uncle, Butch, loved his wit and the caring attitude always shown to those around him.

Lance is survived by his parents, Ken and Beverly Newman of Billings; his brother and family, Kent, Kari and Erich Newman of South Hill, Wash.; aunt and uncle, Butch and Dora Poehler also of South Hill, Wash.; and his aunt, Geneva Gill of Moorcroft, Wyo.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
