HHS boys capture Central A crown

The goal for the Havre High golf team at the beginning of the season was to qualify for the Class A State Meet first and foremost mission accomplished.

Both the boys and girls teams qualified for this weekend's state meet in Shelby in a resounding fashion at the Central A Divisional held at the Anaconda Country Club.

Despite winds gusting over 30 miles per hour and periods of bitter cold rain, the Pony boys team captured the Central A crown with a team score of 319 19 shots ahead of runner-up Dillon's 338 score.

"What they did in that wind and rain, I was so pleased," said Havre High head coach Keith Evenson. "It was a good day."

Havre was paced by three golfers finishing in the top 10. Junior Trent Normandy won the tournament with a 76, while teammate Jon Johnstone was right behind Normandy with a 77. Ben Erickson finished tied for third with a solid round of 81. Chazz Hurlburt and Eric Ward both finished in the top 20 shooting rounds of 85 and 90 respectively.

"The boys were really excited," Evenson said. "They really wanted this tournament."

While Evenson predicted that his boys would challenge for the title, he wasn't quite as sure about how his girls team would fare.

However, his girls came through with a solid performance finishing second behind defending state champion Dillon.

Dillon cruised to an easy victory finishing 42 strokes ahead of the Pony girls. The Beavers' Ashley Meine took the medalist honors with an 89. Meine, along with Dillon's Robin Russell (90) and Browning's Chastity Wagner (95), were the only girls to score under 100.

Havre was led by Brittany Job who finished tied for sixth with a 103. Ryan Hamilton also finished in the top 10 with a 106. Amanda Brock and Mikyla Veis finished in the top 20 with shooting a 109 and 113, respectively. Heather Bowker finished with a 119 also for the Ponies.

"A lot of the girls weren't pleased with their individual scores," Evenson said. "But we made it to state and that's what was important."

The top four teams in each division qualified for the state meet. On the boy's side Dillon, Butte Central and Belgrade also qualified, while on the girls side Anaconda and Livingston will also be traveling to Shelby.

The State A Tournament is a 36-hole two day tournament held at Shelby's Marias Golf and Country Club next Friday and Saturday.
