LOUIS LAMERE, Obituary

FORT BELKNAP Louis LaMere, 79, of Fort Belknap died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at his home due to cancer.

Wake services begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Red Whip Center. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Red Whip Center with burial with military honors at Pony Hill Cemetery.

Louis was born on April 3, 1923, to Gabe and Elizabeth (Saddler) LaMere in Shonkin. He attended schools at Rocky Boy.

Louis worked on ranches on the Hi-Line before joining the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. He participated

in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge.

Louis returned to Montana and worked construction and served in the U.S. Air Force

from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean conflict. He was stationed at Spokane, Wash., and Cheyenne, Wyo. He spent some time in California bartending before returning to Montana. He then worked as a heavy equipment operator until retiring in 1979 due to an injury.

Louis married Ruth Weasel on Feb. 2, 1968, in Havre.

Louis enjoyed horse races, powwows, watching the Harlem Wildcats play football and basketball. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Audrey Lawrence, four brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth LaMere of Fort Belknap; son, Elliott LaMere of Fort Belknap; stepdaughters, Karen and Agnes Lawrence and Jackie Weasel, all of Fort Belknap; stepsons, Dobie Weasel of Omaha, Neb., and Eugene and Jon Weasel of Fort Belknap; brother, Jimmy LaMere of Rocky Boy; sister, Mercalene Parker of Rocky Boy; 25 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.
