WAYNE ZACHAU, Obituary

SOLON SPRINGS, Wis. Wayne Haskell Zachau, 75, longtime Solon Springs, Wis., resident and formerly of Havre, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at a Duluth, Minn., medical center.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2

p.m. in Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Solon Springs with the Rev. Dennis Bergeson officiating.

He was born on Oct. 11, 1927, in Superior to Harold C. and Violet (Haskell) Zachau. He grew up in Superior's East End and graduated from the former East High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific.

He later moved to Havre, where he was employed with the former Great Northern Railway. While in Montana he met his wife, Gloria Dupper.

They were married on Dec. 4, 1950, in the former First Presbyterian Church in East End Superior, and would have celebrated 52 years of marriage this December.

During the 1960s, while in Montana, he owned and operated Midwest Diesel Company and Zack's Our Own Hardware. He established the diesel education program at Northern Montana College in Havre.

Wayne returned to work with the Burlington Northern Railway from 1968 until his retirement in 1986. He retired as superintendent of locomotives in Lincoln, Neb.

Following his retirement, he and his wife Gloria retired to Solon Springs, Wis.

He was a longtime member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Solon Springs and a life member of the Free and Accepted Masons in Montana.

Wayne enjoyed restoring antique cars and antique radios.

He was a loyal husband and father and his life was primarily centered around his family.

Wayne was preceded in death by an infant daughter Mary Ann Zachau and his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria of Solon Springs; daughters, Ruth (Michael) Burnham of Denver, Colo., and Julie (Damon Kapke) Zachau of Superior, Wis.; son, Harry (Shannon) Zachau of Houston, Texas; one grandson; sisters, Virginia Burtness of Bayfield, Wis., and Shirley Spence of Arizona; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorials may be made in Wayne's name to the charity of the donor's choice.

Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, Superior, is assisting the family with arrangements.
