Beeters, Refiners capture district titles

The Sunburst Refiners took care of business at the District 6C volleyball tournament in Chester.

The Refiners entered play Thursday with only one loss on their resume, and when the dust finally settled Saturday night they not only still had one loss, but they were also district champions, as they defeated the host Chester Coyotes by scores of 25-23, 25-23, and 25-18 in the championship match.

The loss to Sunburst gave the Coyotes a second place finish and a trip to the Northern C Divisional tournament in Belt.

The Big Sandy Pioneers took the long road to Belt as they rebounded from an opening round loss to KG on Thursday to finish third. The KouGars also qualified for next weekend's divisional tournament, finishing fourth.

In the championship match, the Refiners got a big lift from Carly Kleinert and Mallory Furr. Kleinert finished the night with 17 kills, eight aces and one block. Furr added 14 kills and two aces. The Coyotes were led by Amanda Schlepp's five kills and four aces.

After losing to KG on Thursday night, the Pioneers eliminated Rocky Boy Friday morning by scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-21. Big Sandy got nine kills and eight aces from Shana Davis in the win, while the Stars were paced by Tia Gopher's 13 kills and seven blocks.

Friday night, the Pioneers then eliminated the second-seeded Blue Sky Eagles by scores of 25-17, 25-21, and 25-15. Shana Davis had 13 kills and Morgan Louvar added seven blocks in the win, while Heather Wendland had seven kills for the Eagles. The Eagles had earlier lost to Chester in the quarterfinals.

The win over Blue Sky put Big Sandy in a Saturday morning rematch with the KouGars. This time the Pioneers came out on top in five games, ending the KouGars run at the District tournament but not their season.

In the third place match, the Pioneers winning streak was snapped by the Chester Coyotes in three straight games, by scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-18. Chester got nine kills from Courtney Fraser, and Mary DeVries added five kills in the victory. Big Sandy was again led by Davis with five kills and Raynee Pearson also added five kills in the losing effort.

Besides their first round win over the Pioneers, KG's run to fourth place included a loss to Sunburst in the quarterfinals and a win over Box Elder in a Friday night loser-out match. That victory eliminated the Bears.

Box Elder lost to Chester in the first round then rebounded to defeat J-I on Friday morning before falling to the KouGars. J-I fell in the opening round to Blue Sky before being eliminated by Box Elder.

Rocky Boy also lost out in two straight matches, falling to Sunburst in the opening match of the tournament and losing out to Big Sandy on Friday morning.

Sunburst, Chester, Big Sandy and KG will now head to Belt on Thursday for the Northern C Divisional tournament. The top two teams from that divisional will advance to the Class C State Tournament in Lewistown in two weeks.

Home court proved to be advantageous for the Chinook Sugarbeeters as they captured the District 2B crown Saturday night by defeating the Malta M-Ettes for the second time in as many days in Chinook.

The Beeters downed the M-Ettes in the championship match by scores of 25-15, 20-25, 27-25 and 25-22.

The Beeters were led by Jennifer Baird's 12 kills. Whitney Lybeck also had a fine night racking up 14 digs and seven blocks.

Chinook opened the District tournament with a decisive victory over the Plentywood wildcats. The Beeters defeated Plentywood by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-13. Chinook got seven kills and two blocks from Lybeck. Holly Dennis added 14 assists and five digs in the victory.

Friday night, the Beeters knocked off the M-Ettes in the semifinals by scores of 28-26, 21-25, 25-22 and 27-25. Chinook got outstanding performances from hitters Brittany Buhmann and Kayla Erskine. They both had 13 kills and Erskine also had five blocks.

Chinook will travel to the Northeast B Divisional tournament in Choteau. Malta, Plentywood and Wolf Point will also advance.
