Pony spikers lose in second round at divisional

The Havre High volleyball team suffered a setback in their quest to reach the Class A State volleyball tournament in Havre next week.

The Ponies fell in a second round contest to Dillon Thursday night in four games at the Central A divisional tournament in Browning. The Beavers downed the Blue Ponies by scores of 25-16, 25-15, 23-25 and 26-24.

Leading the way for the Ponies in the loss was senior Jeanna McPherson with nine kills and ten blocks. Kristi Owens added seven kills and Crystal Pyrak had 10 assists and two aces in the losing effort.

The Beavers were paced by Robin Russell's 18 kills and three blocks. Jenny Castro also had 18 kills in the victory. As a team Dillon racked up 58 kills to Havre's 31.

Havre advanced to the second round with a three-game victory over Butte Central in the first round earlier on Thursday. The Ponies defeated the Maroons by scores of 25-7, 25-13 and 25-22.

Havre was led in the victory by McPherson with 14 blocks and nine kills. Heather LaPrath had nine blocks and Sara Suek chipped in with eight kills. Butte Central got a fine all around game from Jodi Hogart. She had 33 assists, eight digs, two blocks and one ace.

Other first round matches saw Lewistown over Belgrade by scores of 25-13, 25-6 and 25-12. Livingston also defeated Anaconda and Dillon defeated Browning. In the other second round match Thursday night, Lewistown downed Livingston 25-8, 25-16 and 25-9. That victory advances the Eagles into tonight's semifinal match against Dillon. The winner of that match will advance to Saturday night's championship match and will have to be beaten twice in order to lose the divisional championship.

Havre now moves into loser-out play today at 2:00 p.m. against the winner of this morning's loser-out match between Anaconda and Belgrade. If the Ponies win that match, they will advance to the fourth-place loser-out match tonight at 8 p.m.
