LORING Eugene E. Cowan, 78, longtime rancher of Loring, died Nov. 18, 2002, at a Malta hospital.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the Malta Lutheran Church. Burial will be 2 p.m. Friday in the Turner Cemetery with military honors.

Gene was born on April 24, 1924, in Harlem to Harold and Alice (Needham) Cowan. He attended schools in Turner and graduated in 1942. He then went to work in the shipyards at Seattle. Gene joined the Army and was assigned to the 708th Amphibious Tank Battalion in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II.

When the war was over, Gene married his childhood sweetheart, Barbara Stubblefield, in Havre on April 14, 1946. They moved to the Stubblefield ranch near Loring in 1946.

Gene was a Phillips County commissioner from 1983 to 1995. He enjoyed serving the people of Phillips County and worked on many projects that would benefit the county. Gene served on the library, museum and hospital boards. He was a member of the Whitewater School Board when the new school was built in the 1950s.

He farmed and ranched at Loring for 57 years. He worked at being the best farmer and rancher he could be and was a stickler for straight furrows and properly built hay stacks.

Gene was a member of the Malta Masonic Lodge A.F. and A.M., Al Bedoo Shrine, Buckets of Blood, Sacajawea Chapter #37 OES, Loring Lutheran Church and the VFW.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Keith Cowan.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Cowan of Loring; son, Richmond Scott (Roxanne) Cowan of Scottsdale, Ariz.; daughters, Dixie (Tom) Stordahl of Loring, Deborah (Greg) Richau of Billings and Dee (Howard) Arndt of Somers; sister, Delores Gordon of Massillion, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to the Phillips County Historical Society.

Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.
