ROCKY BOY Martin "Marty Keno" Standing Rock, 29, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, in Browning.

A wake service began at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the home of Russell Standing Rock at Rocky Boy. The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Russell Standing Rock residence with a traditional Indian ceremony conducted by Medicine Man Jack Bull. Burial will follow at the Rocky Boy Cemetery.

Martin was born Aug. 3, 1973, to Russell Standing Rock and Eloise Baptiste in Havre. Marty was raised in his early years by grandparents Joe and Florence Standing Rock. He attended Rocky Boy Grade School and graduated from Rocky Boy High School in 1992. His educational honors were: president of the Student Council, Indian Club, SAT leader, basketball and state cross country team. He attended Stone Child College in Rocky Boy.

Marty worked for Chippewa Cree Housing, Stone Child College, and the Chippewa Cree Tribe, and the Pendleton Casino in Pendleton, Ore., and was attending Blackfeet Community College in Browning at the time of his death.

Martin helped his dad with such things as branding, fencing and building sweat lodges. He was a very dedicated sun dancer. He also rode at horse dances, which are religious ceremonies, and he was also dedicated to the peyote ceremonies.

Martin was very soft-spoken, yet a "Smarty Marty." Marty loved and enjoyed his nieces and nephews and they loved him. Marty loved basketball and singing powwow songs, and he felt privileged to sing at the Grass Dance Ceremony.

He was preceded in death by: grandparents, Joe and Florence Standing Rock; uncle, Martin Standing Rock; and a brother, Waylon Stump.

He is survived by: father, Russell Standing Rock of Rocky Boy; mother, Eloise Baptiste of Pendleton; brothers, Brian, Duane, Boose, Toto, Joe and Terrence; sisters, Marvina, Kisser, Sister Standing Rock and Shelley Denny; uncles, Peachy, Videl, Douglas, Kenny, Joe, Jose and Jack; aunts, Chinese, Harriet, Debbie and Deanna; Grandma Jenny, all of Rocky Boy; and hundreds of cousins who were like brothers and sisters.

Services and arrangements are under the direction of the Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.
